Turning Milk Cartons Into Paintings

Looking from the outside, you would never expect to find the riot of colour with which artist Micheline Montgomery has decorated her modest Mississauga home.

Inside is a palette inspired by a stay some years ago in Mexico. She has intense blue on a kitchen wall; sunny gold walls in the dining and living rooms, which she uses as her studio; vibrant primary colored cushions on a wood settee, and table surfaces, where she works, layered with bright paint.

“My grandkids now realize it’s an artist’s floor,” says Montgomery, a mother of three and grandmother of five, of the spattered oak strips in her living room.

The red gravel parking space in front of the house, which allows water to sink into the ground, hints of another colour that informs her life and work: green. She calls herself a green conscious artist.

Her paints and glues are environmentally friendly. She recycles all the bits and pieces she can as materials for her paintings, collages, handmade journals, bookmarks and cards. She even uses the paper from milk and juice cartons. Once liberated from the polyethylene film coating, this paper is bright, white and looks hand-made.

This is what caught my attention when I first met Montgomery at Word on the Street, Toronto’s giant outdoor book fest. at a shared booth, she was fashioning little notepads from corrugated cardboard and recycled paper. She explained where the heavy paper she used for her paintings came from.

How difficult is it to remove the plastic film? It helps if you have a good set of fingernails, making it easier to separate the layers and start the process. Montgomery and I sat in her kitchen, delaminating some Tropicana juice cartons. Once you start lifting the plastic, peeling it back in one sheet while holding the paper beneath down carefully with your other hand, you’ll find it’s finicky, but not too difficult.

One can see why this high-quality paper would be a useful source of recycled fibre on an industrial level. Polycoat cartons and Tetra Paks collected in Toronto’s blue box program are sent off to South Korea where paper mills are equipped to handle the post-consumer waste, stripping away the plastic in the pulping process.

Montgomery uses lots of other recycled and found materials: corrugated cardboard donated by a coffee shop, brown wrapping paper, old books, newspapers and journals, used fridge magnets, even the backs of envelopes.

Her images of choice are faces, mainly of women, sometimes heavily layered with paint, other times, lightly executed.

Montgomery describes her life as a process of unmasking, layer after layer, like the proverbial onion. Learning about her past, is a similar experience. She has worked as a psychiatric nurse at Sick Kids and the Queen Street Mental Health Centre; she earned an M.a. in psychology from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, followed by a PhD in philosophy.

Many of the faces she creates are nurses, a subject she plans to explore artistically.

“A nurse is a soul worker,” she says of her former profession. “When you’re born and when you die, a nurse is there.”

I have an 11 week old Border Collie, she will only go to the toilet outside, I've tried everything to make her go to the toilet on puppy training pads but she wont. She isn't fully vaccinated until 3 weeks time, is it important to keep her in or is it okay to let her in the garden to go to the toilet? am I harming her by letting her out?

Yes, it is necessary. what is not necessary is to keep her INSIDE. You can let her out into the backyard all you want, provided that the only dogs that go out there are your household dogs. what you don't want to do is expose her to other dogs and their feces. That is where she has the potential to pick up parvo, coronavirus and other things.

STOP encouraging her to go inside. It sounds like you have a pup who is almost housebroken. Use that to your advantage. It will save you a lot of headaches in the future.

When the vet says that your dog cannot be taken out until after its injections/shots, this does not mean that it cannot be taken into your own fenced garden/yard. It simply means that your puppy must be keep away from anywhere that could have been contaminated by other dogs.

A puppy must be taken into your garden/yard every hour, after it eats or drinks and when it wakes up after a nap. You should also take it out just before you go to bed, every time you see it eliminate you must praise your puppy. I use a catch phrase when my puppy has a pee, I say “get one” while it is urinating and “big job” when it passes faeces. if you do this your dog will pee on command when it is older. (Unless it’s bladder is empty)

You should set your alarm and try to take your puppy out about twice during the night. if like me you are a heavy sleeper and you don’t trust yourself to wake up, take the lazy way out. My puppy’s sleep in the laundry room until they are toilet trained, during the day I dip newspapers into the urine which it has passed in the garden and put these on top of a thick pad of newspaper at night, they are drawn to this because of the smell and they will pee on this during the night. Nevertheless I go to bed very late and get up very early when I have a puppy.

Eventually your puppy will go to the door when it knows that it wants to eliminate. In spite of the fact that I leave newspapers down at night my puppy’s are clean from an early age. However they are like babies, they have no control until they are older. regardless of how diligent you are, your puppy could still have an accident in the house during the day, it you see it stooping or peeing, pick it up and let it finish in the garden/yard.

Why would you WANT her to piss in the house? Letting her go anywhere inside merely encourages indoor elimination of ALL kinds in ALL spaces, which would completely ruin her progress.

She is perfectly fine to go outside in your private garden – the only real issue with unvaccinated pups going outside is when you're talking about taking them to public areas where other unknown dogs frequent. I was also told by my vet that my puppy could go for short walks once her second set of shots where complete, and could interact with dogs i knew personally at that point.

You have already lost very important opportunities for socialization. the idea of keeping a puppy in until it has all it s shots is an evil, ignorant idea. if your vet ordered it, I would find a new vet. yes, not only take it out to relieve itself, get it out and meet people.

You are only harming her by trying to get her to potty on potty pads. That is enormously confusing to the majority of dogs, and usually creates a major housebreaking problem.
There is no harm in taking your dog outside in its' own yard before being fully vaccinated. Lots of immunity is present from the mother already.

Provided your yard is fully fenced (which it needs to be in any case), by all means get your puppy outside. All babies need sun on their backs after all. It's just taking them out off your property that has risks. It only takes one dog after all ….. Don't use these pads – dogs are confused if started on these, and get the message that it's fine to empty indoors, which it isn't, long term.

Well i guess its ok as long as no other animals have been in your garden as your puppy can get really ill. definitely don't take her for walks or anything yet though until fully vaccinated.

no it is not necessary to let her in the garden if she is not fully vaccinated if you let her in the toilet she learn a good manner if you let her out you harm her many diseases attack her

Going outside to use the bathroom as long as you know your area is free from issues is perfectly. I wouldn't even begin to try and go the pad route.

let her go potty outside – you should just not have her near other dogs outside like dog parks etc but otherwise – go ahead.

Boaters Urged to Play It Safe on Waters

This year, with that impediment gone, local officials expect the Fourth of July weekend to be extremely busy and are warning boaters to be especially careful.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife Fisheries is stepping up enforcement in both parishes into the weekend. It and local parish agencies will be looking for people drinking and operating boats.

On the water, as on land, the legal blood-alcohol limit is .08. Anyone caught with a level higher than that could face jail time, fines and driver’s license forfeiture.

Lt. Col. Jeff Mayne, Louisiana’s boating-law administrator, said he recommends that boat operators avoid alcohol altogether.

“We will have zero tolerance for anyone found operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs on our waters,” Mayne said, noting that in addition to alcohol impairing a boater’s reaction time, balance and vision, it can increase fatigue.

Louisiana had 32 boat-crash fatalities in 2009, the most recent data available, Mayne said. Alcohol was the primary cause in 24 percent of those cases.

That’s higher than the national rate, which blame 16 percent of fatal wrecks on alcohol.

“Drinking is not a good idea,” Terrebonne sheriff’s Lt. Mike Ledet said. “That’s when accidents happen.”

Boat operators, he said, should remain aware of their surroundings, slow down for others and be courteous. “think safe,” said Ledet, who is assigned to the Terrebonne Water Patrol division.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said that without the oil spill, he expects to see many more people on the water for the Fourth of July, which is why his agency has already stepped up enforcement efforts.

“We obviously expect this year to have much more traffic in the Gulf and on surrounding waterway, and we just want to make sure it is a safe and pleasurable experience for everyone.”

Lafourche’s Water Patrol Division and the U.S. Coast Guard teamed up this past weekend for a pre-Fourth enforcement and education campaign. the goal, officials in Lafourche said, is to get the safety message across before the big holiday begins.

Dubbed Operation Dry Water, the plan had officers randomly stopping recreational boaters.

Their main intent was to find drunken boat operators. They stopped more than 50 boaters on Lafourche waterways Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but did not find any boating-while-intoxicated cases.

Lafourche deputy Brett Hymel says increased enforcement for the lack of has made a difference in terms of drinking behavior, as well as increased compliance with safety regulations.

“on a normal day-to-day basis we are not seeing as many violations as we used to,” he said. “People are getting the message of what they need for their boats.”

Hymel, accompanied by deputy Eugene Eiskina, covered waterways from Leeville to Des Allemands over the weekend in their 19-foot Triumph. Coast Guardsmen Dave Tyler, Matthew Crittendon and Milton Brelsford traveled the same waterways in their 24-foot vessel.

A final Coast Guard activity tally was not immediately available, but deputies said they stopped 57 boats containing 136 people over three days. of those, six got warnings, two were sent back to the dock because of safety violations and three people were ticketed.

Those stopped Sunday didn’t mind the intrusion.

“It keeps people safe,” said Brett Marcombe, 16, of Lockport, after he and a friend, 17-year-old Jace Danos, had their crabbing trip interrupted in the Company Canal.

They had no violations and were sent on their way quickly.

Ginger Naquin and Derek Pierce were crabbing in Lake Fields when their skiff was checked, and they didn’t mind either.

“Quick and easy,” was how Naquin described her safety check.

While the deputies checked Naquin and Pierce’s equipment, the Coast Guard vessel turned its sights on a mud boat about a quarter-mile away near a cluster of camps. those boaters got a ticket for a missing flotation device.

Boats must be equipped with life jackets appropriate for each person on board. Children 12 and younger must wear them at all times. in addition, a Coast-Guard approved floating seat cushion or ring must be present on all boats larger than 16 feet.

Some type of audible warning device, such as a horn or a whistle, is also required.

Some boaters who were stopped Sunday said they thought alcohol is not permitted in boats. there is no such restriction, but operating the vessel while intoxicated carries the same penalties as driving a car while under the influence.

Open container laws do not apply to boats.

Although no impaired boat operators were arrested this weekend, Webre says drivers, whether on land or at sea, should not add alcohol to the mix.

“a designated driver is just as important on the water as it is on dry land,” he said.

I brought in some cushions in from the rain and I needed them dry quick so I put them in the dryer and they are dry now just one problem… THEY REEK!!! I fabreezed the crap out of em but now they just smell like GROSS and a FABREEZE mix, what can i do to get rid of the terrible smell??? Thanks a lot for your help!!! have a good day!

They are filled with mold and mildew. Fabreeze will never do anything

Either rewash them and dry them COMPLETELY, or toss them. your choice

What you smell is probably melting rubber. Throw them in the washer but let them air dry. What's the worst that could happen?

its coz they got wet its a vile smell but try and wash them and dry them properly

You get to buy new cushions. Yeah.
