It started with figs, on a plate, stashed under a poolside table.

The caption under the photo in the home design catalog urged readers to “enjoy the comfort and ease of indoor entertaining with outdoor sectionals, pillows and accessories.”

But Molly Erdman saw something else. she saw a chance to poke fun at something, well … kinda ridiculous.

The Los Angeles actor/comedian sat down at her computer last June and wrote her own caption.

“Sweetheart,” it said, “the Turners will be here any minute now! did you put the plate of figs under the table?”

And her blog, “Catalog Living,” was born.

Erdman (you might recognize her as “the wife in the minivan” from the Sonic drive-in commercials) didn’t necessarily set out to create a daily parody of the sometimes serious, overly put-together nature of photos from high-end home accessory catalogs.

One night, though, after she wrote the “fig” caption, she showed it to her boyfriend. He laughed.

Then she wrote more captions and her comedian friends thought those were funny, too.

Erdman realized she was on to something – and as her blog entries multiplied, they started getting attention from Facebook fans and people in the design field.

“I’ve gotten a lot of e-mails from catalog photographers and art directors,” she says. “They say, ‘We always think what we do is ridiculous.’ ”

One of Erdman’s favorites showed a rowboat on a dock filled with pillows.

Her caption: “In her annual end-of-season ritual, Elaine sent the outdated summer cushions out to sea.”

Julie Roller, a “Catalog Living” fan in Wamego, Kan., checks the site every morning right after she reads the news online. she likens the humor to the TV show “Seinfeld.”

“I just can’t get enough of Gary, Elaine and their wacky lives!” Roller says.

Gary and Elaine are the main fictional “characters” in Erdman’s blog. They’re probably in their 40s, she says. they seem to have no jobs, are very wealthy and have a “ridiculous 1,000-room house.”

“Gary’s sort of the bumbling fool, and Elaine has her hands on her hips, telling him what to do all the time,” Erdman explains. “To me, they are the people who live in Pottery Barn.”

Gary and Elaine celebrate holidays, too. One recent “Catalog Living” entry has a photo of a tidy to-do list that includes “DECK THE HALLS” as one of the items.

Erdman’s tag line: “Oh, it’s not all holiday spirit. The Halls are our next door neighbors.”

This 16th-century inn, with a strange name, now offers a bed for the night, says mark Rowe

The combination of an ancient pub and a wild moorland setting is usually a winning one, as the 16th-century Elephant’s Nest Inn, in Devon, proves. And now you can sleep, as well as eat and drink, at one of the West Country’s finest pubs, tucked away in the folded lanes of western Dartmoor.

The Elephant’s Nest Inn, waymarked by a wooden fingerpost stuck in a hedge a mile distant, has started offering patrons a place to rest their heads after a pleasurable evening downstairs in the main dining area, which is all wooden beams, old maps of the surrounding mines and, perhaps predictably, dozens of miniature elephants and the pub’s name translated into dozens of languages.

If the last of these features sounds a little contrived, well, it is. but that is no criticism because, in addition to this bit of marketing, the owners apply the same bright imagination and flair to delivering high standards of accommodation and food.

So where did that name come from? I’d hoped to learn that an elephant had somehow found its way here, perhaps as part of a Dickensian circus troupe, but the reality is slightly more prosaic: an overweight landlord from the 1950s, when shoehorned into a snug corner of the pub, was likened to an elephant sitting in a nest by a customer. the old name, the new Inn, was soon ditched, though it remains on the OS map and on some road atlases.

The bedrooms

An extension – sympathetic to the building and clad in local stone – has allowed three rooms to be added, two upstairs and one downstairs. the lower room opens up through French doors on to a sheltered patio with views across the valley and you can make your way into the beer garden from here. Furnishings are extremely comfortable and stylish – the king-sized bed is perfectly sprung. there are plenty of smellies, fluffy cushions and solid oak floors underfoot. in winter, you’ll appreciate the underfloor heating. Baths are generously sized. Each room has a flat-screen television and Wi-Fi, along with a refrigerator with milk for tea and coffee.

The food and drink

Local is the theme here – and in the West Country that’s pretty much a guarantee of excellence in sourcing, rearing and presentation. the beef, pork and lamb are from local herds and the fish comes up the A30 from St Ives daily. Sunday roasts are prodigious and mouth-watering – but you’ll need to go easy on the generous breakfast (all the meats, yoghurts and cereals, served in a cosy nook of the pub with elephants of every shape and description on the walls). Dinner is served either inside or – if the weather holds – in the flower-filled garden with splendid views across the surrounding tors of Dartmoor. the bar caters for every taste – choose from five wines by the glass or an extensive, world-ranging wine list, plus there are any number of Devon beers, including Jail Ale brewed in the shadow of the prison in Princetown. WHITMAN — Saftler’s Fabrics, whose roots reach back over 90 years in Whitman, has lost its longtime store location at the intersection of routes 14 and 18 through foreclosure. But the grandson of the man who founded the business vows he will find a new place from which to serve his customers.

“Don’t worry,’’ Eric Saftler declared recently. “We’re not going out of business.’’

Saftler can stay put until early spring. He is working to find a new storefront in Whitman, although he concedes he may have to move to a spot with better access from major roadways, like the commercial areas in West Bridgewater.

Whichever way it goes, it will mark the end of a Whitman landmark known to many residents in Southeastern Massachusetts. “you could drive a person around blindfolded, then plunk them down here, and they would know exactly where they were,’’ Saftler said.

Joseph Saftler started Saftler’s Fabrics in 1919, selling fabric and notions out of a suitcase to women working in Whitman factories. He opened his first storefront in Abington in the 1920s, but moved back to Whitman in 1937, running a fabric store on the current site in an old barn built in 1890.

Business was not always flush, said Eric Saftler.

“my grandfather hit hard times during the Depression and World War II,’’ he said. But after World War II, the economy improved and so did the sale of fabric.

“my grandfather’s four sons returned from the war, and all joined the business,’’ Saftler said. “the business was growing, and the building was expanded in the 1950s to what it is today.’’ the old barn, he added, is in one corner of the current store building.

Saftler’s Fabrics enjoyed a heyday in the 1980s, employing some 50 workers and topping $2 million in annual gross revenue. “the bridal business back then was huge,’’ said Saftler. “Then bridal shops began to open. Home décor was also good for us until places like Home Depot started offering similar items.’’

He has been grappling with the changing times for the past two decades, trying to keep the family business viable. “With the price of clothes so cheap, people don’t make them themselves anymore,’’ he said. Big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot further dug into the store’s customer base by offering items like standard blinds at low prices.

Saftler now focuses on craft and quilting supplies, crafts classes, and the sale of high-quality sewing machines. the business also offers custom-cut foam filler for indoor and outdoor furniture and cushions for boats. currently the store has 20 employees and grosses about $800,000 annually, Saftler said.

But he has recently had trouble keeping his business in the black and making mortgage payments, and last month Mutual Bank picked up his 5-acre site in a foreclosure auction.

I use a wine barrel as dog houses, they work great and my other dogs love them…
They are about 30 inches long and about 18 inches with cushion in it, and am not sure if my german shepherd will fit in it, it wont be for laying in all the time its for keeping warm on winter nights…
How long do they get to be from chest to rump?

If it will not fir i am going to have to build a house =/… igloos and other store bought houses arent weatherproof enough…

wth? no, a wine barrel is NOT an adequate shelter for a dog, especially in the winter. i don't care whether you think your dogs "love them" the law that says it's animal neglect not to give your dog proper shelter outdoors won't.

add: oh really? I dare you to call up your local SPCA or animal cops, ask THEM, the experts, if it's OK enough shelter, I have a lot of choice words I'd like to say but instead I will just pray those dogs are rescued from your home before the cold winters hit in Oregon. And dogs need raw meaty BONES and organs in addition to meat for a balanced diet.

I am not sure what area you are from but here in Ohio we have a multipurpose cleaner called MEAN GREEN
and I spray it on and take a brush and scrub a little and hose it off and it's clean and my cushions are fabric ….
